CSUN’s Sustainability Map: Find Out Where You Can Do Your Part

It’s Easier Than You Think

By Yulissa Alvarez and Laura Gallegos

California State University, Northridge is well underway to being one of the most sustainable college campuses.  With paper recycling bins, electric vehicle charging stations and cardboard recycling bins scattered all over campus students have a greater opportunity to help accomplish the University’s pledge.

The University has pledged to achieve climate neutrality by the year 2040.  In order to achieve this task they have implemented both a Climate Action Plan and Sustainability Plan to ensure that sustainability is achieved through planning and policy decisions, capital project development and campus operations.

Students are able to partake in the University’s mission by simplify throwing their trash away in the correct bins and recycling the appropriate materials.

CSUN Sustainability Timeline

By Brian Williams and Elisa Carrillo

If you’ve ever wondered how to help secure a more sustainable future, The Sustainability Center at CSUN is committed to helping spread awareness for a more Eco-friendly future.

The Sustainability Center is part of a growing initiative to ensure the campus goes green, with an emphasis on bringing sustainable efforts to campus.

To date, they’ve integrated paper straws into the restaurants, as part of their efforts to get CSUN to ban single use plastics, and have added water refill stations around campus to eliminate liquid waste. They’ve also made trash cans that compartmentalize waste separately, such as a section for trash and another for recyclables.

This interactive timeline provides context ad details about the special events that the Sustainability Center does with CSUN in order to promote going green, including information on Earth Fair, A Fashion for Passion Clothing Drive, and Garden Day.

How Green Are You? A Quiz On Sustainability

Although climate change, sustainability, and attempts to “go green” are turns of phrase taken for granted in everyday conversation, few understand what it means to really live a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

Despite the best efforts of campaigns that encourage us to recycle or to be mindful of California’s recent record-breaking drought, and statistics that tell us 75% of product waste is recyclable, only 30% of Americans are found to be recycling.

So what can we do? By taking this quiz, you can learn a few basic tricks on how to be more eco-friendly. Some of these might feel like common sense, but you might be surprised!
